Florida's 'Billion Dollar Bed Boom'

A surge of investment in refurbishments, renovations, new hotel openings and exciting developments is changing the landscape of Florida's tourism. Following our update last week, here's more of what's happening in the Sunshine State.

Naples, Marco Island & the Everglades
The new Hyatt House Naples/Fifth Avenue is under construction along the picturesque Gordon River section of Naples Bay, targeted to open in March 2016. The Seminole Tribe of Florida has recently opened a new 99-room hotel at its Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee complex just northeast of Naples, featuring modern decor with a fresh Florida feel.

The Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa has completed the first phase of a $250 million transformation that will ultimately result in its rebranding to JW Marriott Beach Resort Marco Island, the first JW Marriott Beach Resort in the continental US.

The Marriott Residence Inn Naples has completed a $1.8 million dollar renovation and The Naples Grande Beach Resort has recently been transitioned from the Waldorf Astoria to the independently branded Naples Grande Beach Resort. The hotel recently completed $18 million in renovations.

Universal Orlando Resort
Guests can now be among the first to book reservations for the newest on-site hotel at Universal Orlando Resort - Loews Sapphire Falls Resort. Stays are being accepted for July 14, 2016. Built around a lush, tropical lagoon and towering waterfall, the new, 1,000-room Caribbean-themed hideaway is the fifth hotel at Universal Orlando.

St. Pete/Clearwater
The 230-room beachfront Opal Sands Resort, sister property of the luxurious Sandpearl, is on pace to open in February/March 2016. Down the road, The Wyndham Grand Resort will become Clearwater Beach's largest property, with 450 rooms.

Miami
Miami's latest luxury development is Brickell City Centre, Swire Properties Inc.'s $1 billion mixed-use development downtown, which will span 9 acres, including a department store, luxury shops, restaurants, hotel, office towers and condominiums. It will include EAST, Miami, set to open late 2015, Swire's first lifestyle hotel in the US.

Key West
The elegant Playa Largo Resort & Spa, the latest hotel to join Marriott's Autograph Collection, is set to open in early 2016. The 14.5-acre waterfront resort features 144 luxury rooms and suites, 10 private bungalows and a three-bedroom beach house.

Key West's critically acclaimed Southernmost on the Beach, Southernmost Hotel in the USA, La Mer and the Dewey House are now united into one resort named Southernmost Beach Resort Key West, spanning more than 6 acres.

In Old Town Key West, Ocean Breeze Inn and Southwinds Motel have been combined into one entity - Southwinds Motel. Meanwhile, the Spindrift Motel is to be transformed into H2O Suites, a luxury accommodation featuring 22 one-bedroom suites, set to open in summer 2016.
